Tomorrow I’ll be driving up to Indiana to check out a beater ‘04 Baja. It’s a manual even.

I know to keep an eye out for head gasket symptoms like oily coolant, etc. Even considering an engine block test kit, if anyone has any opinions on that. It has 165k miles, would the timing belt had to been changed By then? Not really looking for a day one project like that. Any other things to keep an eye out for? Common Rust issues? I know this era wrx guys thought the transmission was weak but since this is n/a I’m not all that concerned.

If it’s at 165k and the timing belt has not been changed you should run away. Should be done every 100k. Usually the head gaskets are replaced also.

Timing belt is probably every 100k, so hopefully it has been done at least once.

Good call. I was already going to be looking hard at the right front since there’s body damage there

Yeah, hoping for a happy little timing belt replacement sticker in the bay. I’m hoping it’s the body damage, miles  and manual making it cheap rather than, you know, being on its last coolant flush.

Tbh,  If the belt hasn’t been done I’m probably going to pass. If I wanted to do that much work on a Baja I’d get a prettier one with a blown gasket
